Cyanoacrylate is the main ingredient in what is commonly known as super glue.
Its discovery dates back to 1942, during World War II, when chemist Harry Coover was searching for transparent materials for precision rifle sight lenses.
During his experiments, he noticed that a particular chemical substance had exceptional and immediate adhesion to various surfaces: it was cyanoacrylate.
Despite this discovery, the substance was set aside for several years because it was considered too sticky and difficult to handle.
It wasn’t until 1951 that Coover, then working for Kodak, realized its commercial potential and patented it, launching the first super glue available on the market.
The Evolution of Cyanoacrylate Glue
Since then, cyanoacrylate has undergone several improvements, enhancing its performance in:
✔ Drying speed – Today’s super glues work in just a few seconds.
✔ Strength – New formulas provide ultra-strong adhesion resistant to moisture, temperature variations, and impacts.
✔ Versatility – Used in many industries: from modeling to automotive repairs, dental prosthetics, and DIY projects.
✔ Precision – New formats and applicators allow for extremely precise bonding, even on delicate surfaces.
Where is Cyanoacrylate Used?
Thanks to its unique properties, cyanoacrylate is used in various fields:
🔹 Modeling – Ideal for bonding plastic, resin, and metal with precision.
🔹 Automotive – Used for small repairs, fixing seals, and aesthetic components.
🔹 DIY & Crafting – Perfect for bonding wood, ceramic, rubber, and many other materials.
🔹 Dental Prosthetics & Nail Art – Used for temporary dental repairs and artificial nail applications.
